SWALEC Division One East Round-Up

Newbridge continued their reign at the top of One East with an eight-try drubbing of Rumney. Brothers and opposite wingers Trevor and David James tormented the visitors with a brace each as the league-leaders cruised to a 57-13 victory.

Nearest rivals Bargoed remained level on points with their own bonus-point thrashing of free-falling Glamorgan Wanderers. Lock Lee Williams bulldozed over twice whislt fly-half Matthew Hurley touched-down twice and kicked seven conversions and a penalty to amass a personal tally of 27 points.

Ebbw Vale kept up the pressure on the trailblazing duo with a 38-8 defeat of Treorchy, sharing five tries between Dan Dearden, Ashley Sweet, Ben Parry, Wes Cunliffe and Tristan Davies.

Mountain Ash piled the pressure on struggling Tredegar with a 42-7 triumph to move themselves clear of the relegation zone.

Gilfach Goch eased past Beddau 29-13 thanks to a brace from lock Paul Llewellyn and Blackwood beat Merthyr 22-10 at Glan-Yr-Afon.

SWALEC Divison One West Round-Up

One West leaders Waunarlwydd slipped to their first defeat of the season at the hands of visiting Bonymaen. The sides were level at 11-all going into the break, but flanker and captain Nick Clancey smashed over for the visitors to give them a 19-16 win.

Carmarthen Athletic were unable to compromise on Waunarlwydd’s slip-up, as they were beaten by Narberth at the Lewis Lloyd Ground. Brothers Toby and Sam Smith had set Athletic on a course to the top of the table with first-half tries, but Narberth hit back with a brace from wing Nick Jones. Touch-downs from wing Rhys Thomas, centre Rhys Lewis and scrum-half Scott Maynard restored Athletic’s lead, but metronomic kicking from Rhys Davies and Adam Phillips kept the Otters in touch before skipper Steve Martin barrelled over to ensure a scintillating 40-38 victory.

UWIC returned to their customary strong form with an easy win over Bridgend Athletic. No. 8 Sam Cross, wing Connor Truman, full-back Dan Bibby, centre Jamie George and lock Josh Tyler all crossed to amass a 40-10 triumph.

Llanharan wing Steffan Jones scored twice but was eclipsed by Niko Setaro’s haul of 18 points for Whitland, helping his side to a 23-21 win.

Elsewhere, Llangennech squeezed past TATA Steel 33-30 and Tondu beat Ammanford 34-13.
