Halfpenny relishing Ireland clash

Wales wing Leigh Halfpenny is relishing the chance to face Ireland in the World Cup quarter-finals but has warned ‘the job isn’t done’ by simply reaching the last eight.

A clinical performance and emphatic victory over Fiji yesterday confirmed Wales’ place in the knock-out stages of the tournament and set up a mouth-watering tie with Ireland in Wellington this Saturday.

Halfpenny was obviously delighted following the 66 v 0 victory but believes Wales are still looking to improve and that they are a long way from completing the job they set out to do.

“We came into the game knowing what we had to do for qualification and we talked about really putting in a big performance to carry on the momentum into the quarter-finals,” said the Cardiff Blues star.

“And we have certainly done that.

“We are thoroughly pleased with the result and we created a lot out there.

“All the hard work is really showing and we are looking physical and fit and that is taking us through games.

“We were really happy not to concede any tries in the game and that’s huge for our confidence.

“You could see the desperation in the boys not to concede any tries even though we were so far ahead we tackled our hearts out.

“It is another win but we are still looking to improve.

“The quarter-final is going to be a massive game and the job is not done yet.

“We know Ireland well and they have been playing well so far in the tournament.

“We are looking forward to the game and its really exciting.

“A lot of players know each other really well and have been on tours together so its going to be great and it’s a game we are desperately looking forward to.”
