Gwernyfed over-run Treorchy

Gwernyfed maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign in Division 1 with a thumping 70-3 victory over Treorchy to confirm their status as a rising force.

The rampant Gwernyfed side ran over for a total of 10 tries and were always fully in command from the outset.

This was a good day for Gwernyfed and potentially an auspicious one for the future. Stiffer opposition than a disjointed Treorchy lie ahead but the class of Kate Price and Rosie Jones was impossible to ignore with the Cup and plate competitions looming.

With stand in scrum half Megan Snape enjoying an armchair ride behind a dominant pack on her first run out in this position, the watching Gwernyfed coaches had numerous reasons to be cheerful.

Treorchy declared their hand early by arriving with only 13 players. Opting for passive scrums they were hardly at full strength, and sadly the result was a formality.

What to take from it for the home side? Kayleigh Rees, is interesting as a wing with gas to burn. El Franham is fast becoming an assured fly-half. Kirsty Prosser has the makings of a classy full back.

‘The unit’ Lily Snape is going to provide some real snarl in the back row and Price provided power in the second row. Otherwise it was training-ground stuff; enjoyable enough, but lacking real intensity after the initial blitz that gave Gwernyfed four tries in the first 20 minutes, that included a brace for both full back Prosser and Rees. Not to be out done, captain Megan Snape, took a quick penalty tap to dart over under the posts.

There was a crunch and crackle about the home team’s defence, too, and their half-time lead of 35-3 was not a warped reflection of the contest.

A defence-splitting break two minutes into the second half saw Rosie Jones cross for her first ever try. The next came through Del Thomas. From Treorchy there was a lot of physicality, but a stout defence from Gwernyfed which prevented the ball being grounded twice, was about it.

Also in the second half Gwernyfed introduced other heavyweights from the bench, ball carrying Simone Hodges gained yardage as did new line out jumper Nic Haines, and Gwernyfed added three more tries through Rees, Lily Snape and Harry Jones.

To complete the day Del Thomas converted all 10 tries.
