Principality Premiership round-up

With the top two in the Principality Premiership not playing until Easter Monday, Llandovery took full advantage by beating the Carmarthen Quins at Church Bank to go top of the table.

But the Drovers were unable to pick up a bonus point, crossing for just two tries in a 23-12 win over Quins, whose own title hopes are all but over.

Centre Matthew Jacobs and second row Matthew Harbut touched down for the hosts, and second half scores for the Quins – through fullback Daniel Evans and centre Jason Harries – were not enough for the visitors to avoid leaving empty-handed.

Llanelli’s bid for championship glory also lives on as they thrashed Swansea 42-22 at Parc y Scarlets.

Winger Bowdy Davies grabbed a brace of tries and number eight Craig Price, scrum half Joe Heatley, centre Nick Reynolds and winger Iolo Evans crossed for one each.

Thanks to touch downs from wing Lewis Williams, centre Nicky Harwood and replacement number eight Steffan Jones, Swansea had only trailed 30-22 with five minutes remaining. But two late tries from the hosts put the gloss on a big win.

Meanwhile, Pontypridd entertained vociferous visiting supporters at the Arms Park as they trounced Cardiff 43-20. Ponty scored four tries, through Matthew Nuthall, Gavin Dacey, Dan Godfrey and Rhys Downes, but outside half Lewis Williams pulled the strings and kicked all four conversions, four penalties and a drop goal for a personal tally of 23 points.

Pontypool’s 25-12 win at the Bridge Field over Bedwas ensured Pooler leapfrogged their hosts, who replace them in 13th place. Tries for Dan Robinson (2) and Gareth Williams gave the visitors a morale boosting win.

Elsewhere, eight-try Bridgend condemned lowly Tonmawr to yet another defeat at the Brewery Field as the Ravens ran out 57-24 winners. The Pitmen are now a huge 31 points adrift of Bedwas.
