Dragons aim to help Prydie fulfil potential

Darren Edwards admits Newport Gwent Dragons will do everything they can to ensure Tom Prydie fulfils his Wales ambitions.

The Porthcawl youngster became Wales’ youngest capped player when he faced Italy in the 2010 RBS 6 Nations.

But the starlet’s career has been derailed by a succession of injuries. Prydie spent the second half of last season on loan at London Wasps and has since quit the Ospreys for the Dragons.

But the fullback-cum-wing demonstrated his qualities as Wales Under-20s claimed third place in the recent Junior World Championship – their highest ever finish.

“Tom was a young man getting capped by Wales and he deserved that at the time but for me it’s all about looking after the player and giving him the opportunity to demonstrate the talent he has got,” said Edwards.

Prydie went on to win four full caps and became Wales’ youngest scorer against South Africa, four months after his debut.

He was instrumental with Wales Under 20’s campaign in South Africa and booted them to their historic group stage victory over New Zealand.

He then racked up a 29-point haul, including two tries in the final pool match against Samoa.

Edwards reckons Prydie’s form at the Junior World Championships demonstrates his ability and is confident he will forge an illustrious international career.

“Tom has that ability and he is still so young,” said Edwards.

“He has just turned 20 and he has a huge amount of time ahead of him.

“It’s just important that we take him through it at the right pace and get him onto the Wales stage.

“It’s important that I fuel his ambition and get more caps for him.

“He wants to play for a Welsh region and play for Wales. I was happy he made that decision.

“He went to Wasps on loan and there was interest all around Britain but it just proves what Tom wants to do.

“He showed his obvious potential when he played for Wales at such a young age.

“He is a great strike runner with huge amount of rugby ability. I just think it is great for Tom to come here and open a new chapter in his career.”
