Reducing the number of unqualified coaches has been a huge task but one the WRU has risen to successfully.
Last year saw 137 unqualified coaches across Wales receive their relevant new qualifications which reduced the number of unqualified coaches working in the game by 33%.
“We have made a conscious effort to reduce the unqualified coaches coaching within our clubs and schools,” said WRU Coach Development Manager, Gerry Roberts.
“In order to do this we have carried out an audit from the clubs and schools to identify these coaches. We are urging these coaches to book themselves onto a WRU coaching course within Wales.”
Due to increased local demand, the WRU has run Level two courses in a number of different venues this year which include a course in Monmouth for the first time. The aim of these courses is to develop greater knowledge of the game of rugby union and management and coaching of players at all ages.
Level three courses, which provide attendees with the skills to deliver a full coaching session, have increased with two more courses being run. This has seen an 8% rise in participation.
A revised Towards Level 4 Course was run for the first time last year with an improved version of this beginning in September 2012.
Elsewhere, the appointment of four new Coach Development Officers last year has seen the quality of courses and the resources being developed improve immeasurably.
