The Wizards slipped to a late 23-20 defeat against Newport, winger Elliot Frewen touching down late on for the Black and Ambers, but despite the result, the club’s first initiative at inviting youngsters to the ground was a huge success.
Junior members from Taibach, from U7 through to U11 formed a guard of honour as the teams came out and watched the game from the stands as Newport went home with the victory.
“We’ve got a good relationship with Aberavon which has developed over the years,” said Gary Maal, senior coach at Taibach.
“The children always enjoy it down there, especially getting on to the field at the start and at half-time.
“We got a couple of games of touch rugby going which was good for the youngsters and the older players went to watch the game which was a great learning experience for them.
“All the kids have fond memories of the day and it’s important to see what they can aim for in the future.
“It was ideal for their development.”
As part of widening their role in the community, Aberavon are looking to run this scheme at home games throughout the season.
“We would like to thank the children, parents and coaches of Taibach RFC for coming along and watching the Wizards play,” said Aberavon commercial manager Gareth Howells.
