The young Scarlets put their opponents to the sword, the U16 running in nine tries in their 57-6 win while the U18 scored six themselves in a 39-17 victory leaving Scarlets’ performance manager Kevin George delighted.
“The U16 are back on track, we played a lot of squad players and got a number of good performances including one from our young No. 8 Steffan Tafestauffer,” he said.
“Our pack took total control and we were deserved winners. The U18s are a little more complex as we’re in the middle of two big college games so we had to mix and match a bit.
“It’s been a bit of a balancing act but we’re more than happy with how it went. This year’s team is one of the strongest we have had at U18 level.”
For the U16, it was a particularly pleasing result given the number of new players who were making their first start for the region. The convincing win also ended a run of two consecutive defeats.
On a dry, sunny day at Parc y Scarlets, it was RGC who opened the scoring with a penalty from Danny Cross. But from then on in it was all the home side. In a high tempo game, Scarlets’ superior fitness and skill level caused problems for the North as their defence was run ragged.
Scarlets’ fullback Jack Evans scored 22 points including two first half tries as his side ran riot. Steffan Davies and Billy McBryde added further scores before half-time as they put the game to bed inside the first half.
Lock Stephen Leonard and the two Shaun’s, Evans and Pearce went over before McBryde’s second and a Dan Gealy score added gloss to the score line.
At Bynea, wing Josh Adams scored a hat trick as the U18 side ran out convincing winners in an entertaining game. The Scarlets outscored their north Wales opponents by six tries to three with Adams opening the scoring inside two minutes.
Lock Alex Washbourne added a second before Lewis Stockton and Tom Williams responded for RGC. Fly-half Dan Jones then kicked a penalty to give his side a half-time lead of 15-10, one they extended after the break.
Tom Phillips and Josh Middleton added further scores before Adams completed his hat trick with two late tries. RGC’s only response was a score from right wing Lewis Stockton.
