Three tries in a match-defining 10 minute period in the final quarter saw Dragons race past their rivals from the Blues to run out 34-26 victors at Sardis Road in the WRU Regional Age Grade Under 18 championship.

There were five yellow cards in the game, three to the Dragons and two to the Blues, and it was while Blues flanker Harry Proctor was off the field that the Dragons struck the match winning blow. Back row man Lennon Greggains powered over for his side’s fifth try and there was no way back for the Blues.

Ten minutes earlier centre Tom Hoppe had run in the try that put the Dragons back in front and both tries were converted to turn a 19-17 deficit into a 34-19 lead. Even though the Blues hit back with a fourth try of their own from Ioan Davies, it was too little, too late.

Dragons full back James McCarthy impressed with two tries and centre Joel Mahony grabbed the other for the visitors. The Blues tries came from hooker Iestyn Harries, centre Rhys Davies, outside half Ben Thomas and full back Davies.

Having launched their campaign with a 31-19 win at the Arms Park this was a set-back for the young Blues side and a significant triumph for the Dragons. They had been beaten by the Scarlets, 28-17, at Ystrad Mynach in their opening fixture.

The Scarlets head to Llandovery’s Church Bank to face the Ospreys tomorrow for a 7.15pm kick-off. The game is due to be televised by S4C and they will go into the fixture on the back of a morale boosting 33-3 win over RGC 1404 at Parc Y Scarlets at the weekend.

The home side ran in five tries without reply after falling behind to an early penalty by Nick Dundee. Full back Tomi Lewis grabbed the first of the five tries, four of which Dan Evans converted, and the others were scored by Aled Rees, Cameron Collins, Garan Williams and Joe Roberts.

RGC head to the Dragons on Sunday, while the Under 16 tournament also has a full fixture list this week with three matches on Wednesday night and a fourth match on Sunday involving the Blues and RGC.
