The Ospreys skipper has been ruled out of the European Rugby Challenge Cup quarter-final clash with Stade Francais, but does not require surgery. Jones is expected to return at the start of May and will be hoping to be involved if the high-flying Ospreys can reach the Guinness PRO12 play-offs.

There is some good news for the 31-year-old, who should return in time for the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand this summer. Jones will not return before Warren Gatland names his touring party on April 19, but will be hoping to make the plane to face the All Blacks.

A short statement from the WRU read: “Alun Wyn suffered a shoulder injury in the France v Wales RBS Six Nations match at the weekend and, following scans and orthopaedic consultation, he will undergo an initial six week period of rehabilitation.”

Jones, who became the first Welsh player to start 100 tests for his country in Paris last weekend,  led the Lions to victory in the third and final Test against Australia in Sydney four years ago when they won their first series in 16 years.
