The students scored two tries in the opening six minutes, and had bagged a bonus point by the break, but made life difficult for themselves when they lost lock Eduardo Balocco and Harri Dobbs to yellow cards in the space of three minutes.
That opened the door for the visitors, who made the most of their two player advantage by creating a try for scrum half Rhys Lane to cut the gap to nine points. Wing Rhys Gealy got the third try and then Balocco made amends for his yellow card by crashing over for a try in the seventh minute of injury time at the end of the first half to give the home side a 29-10 interval lead.
Narberth got a second try after the break, but George Simpson took his match tally to 12 points with a second half penalty to notch his team’s first win.
Reigning champions Pontypool used their forward power to bag two driving line-out tries from Ben Parry in the first half at Trebanos to lead 17-3. They extended that advantage with a Rob Nash try early in the second half, but then found the new boys full of fight.
Lock Rhys Griffiths drove over from a line-out, there was a penalty try from another and Luke Griffiths scored a third. Griffiths converted two and kicked a first-half penalty for a match tally of 12 points, but Pooler took the spoils 27-24.
Scrum half Mikey Jones was the toast of Newcastle Emlyn as he crossed for a try in each half to steer his side to a 24-19 home win over Tata Steel to get their season off the mark. Wing Llyr Jones ran in the first try as the home side raced into a 14-0 lead.
But by the break Tata, who finished third last season, had cut the gap to two points, but Jones struck again and full back Dan Davies added a penalty to his three conversions to stretch to lead to 24-12. Tata added a late try but it was only good enough to earn them a losing bonus point.
Glynneath club president Max Boyce chewed his nails down to the quick in the second half of his club’s 16-13 home win over Bedlinog. Having battled back from an early try, Boyce’s side were level 13-13 at the break.
Hooker Gary Tennant got the first home try and then full back Josh Ferriman ran in the second. Outside half Dylan Francis added a penalty and then landed what turned out to be the match winning kick three minutes into the second half.
Newly promoted Rhydyfelin picked up their first points with a 20-12 home win over Skewen. Centre Ross Lucas and replacement wing Jordan Rees scored their tries and Dai Gratton converted them both and kicked two penalties.
