Pivac extends Scarlets contract

Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac has committed his future to the Welsh region by signing a new contract.

The New Zealand-born boss led the Llanelli-based side to the Guinness PRO12 title at the end of last season as his team lifted their first silverware since 2004.

Playing an enterprising brand of rugby, the Scarlets have improved out of sight under Pivac’s guidance and are top of Conference B in this term’s Guinness PRO14.

His new contract will see Pivac remain in West Wales until at least the end of 2019-20.

“I’ve made no secret of the fact I’m enjoying my time here,” Pivac said.

“I’m looking forward to the next few years and seeing the Scarlets continue to develop and grow and I’d like to thank the board of directors for their continued support.

“We’ve done a lot of hard work to get the team to where we are and it’s a project that isn’t finished yet. We’re at stage one of a two-stage process if you like.

“We’re now competitive in the PRO14 and we knew it would take three years plus to be knocking on the door to win the championship.

“The next step is to be competitive in Europe on a regular basis. I think the last two weeks have shown that when we get our top side out there, we are very competitive.

“We’ve had a few top-class players unavailable. I don’t think we’re far off.”

Pivac is already planning for the long term with the Scarlets as he continues to work alongside assistant coaches Stephen Jones, Byron Hayward and Ioan Cunningham.

“I now want to help take the team to the next level by retaining the bulk of the current group of players we have and strengthening the squad where we need to,” he said.

“I want to see that process through.”

Commenting on the news of Pivac’s contract extension, Jon Daniels, Scarlets general manager of rugby said: “Three years ago we embarked on a journey to deliver an environment where local rugby players, supplemented with quality non-Welsh players, could maximise their potential and deliver on-field success in a style which the local community could be proud of.

“To achieve this we needed a progressive and innovative environment underpinned by stability, detailed planning and good values.

“The progress made in this time is evident for all to see, but there is clearly more work to do and we are delighted Wayne has agreed to accept the challenge of taking our rugby performance to the next level by extending his contract here at the Scarlets.”
