Fuelled by the emotion and excitement of their first ever regional game, RGC launched into the Scarlets from the off. After a sustained period of early pressure, the ball was fed to Jess Kavanagh Williams, who almost got the home team of to the perfect start, only for the scoring run to be recalled due to a foot in touch.
To their credit, the visiting Scarlets withstood this early pressure to take the lead. From a typically powerful burst by captain Sioned Harries, the ball was moved wide. When winger Mari Griffiths was halted short of the line, prop Caryl Thomas was able to pick up and power over from close range.
The score seemed to spur on the Gogs who soon were back on level terms with a score from No8 Nicky Crawford. The home team were awarded a penalty deep in the Scarlets 22. From the quick tap, Crawford caught the visitors defence unawares to ground the ball to ensure the teams went in at the break, locked at 5-5.
The Scarlets dominated the early exchanges of the second half and were duly rewarded when young outside half Lleucu George showed strength and determination and no little skill to evade the cover defence and score under the cross bar. Full back Jodie Evans addedthe extras.
The North Walian scrum began to take its toll on the visitors. The home team drove deep into the Scarlets half. After some dynamic phase play, Crawford was once again on hand to score her second try of the match.
With a dominant scrum the Gogs maintained the pressure on the opposition. From a powerful drive, the home team were awarded a penalty. Crawford rounded off an excellent individual performance by slotting the penalty and putting her team into the lead for the first time.
The Scarlets had the opportunity to snatch it at the death. On the last play of the game they were awarded a penalty. When full back Evans pulled the kick wide, the referee blew the final whistle to round off an historic day.
* Earlier in the day, the Scarlets Ladies U18’s team maintained their impressive start to the regional championship with another bonus point win over an industrious RGC team.
Tries from Caitlin Lewis (2), Sian Davies (2), with Hatty Davies, Darcy Thomas, Ellen Morris, Celyn Lazenby and Full Back Rosie Davies all adding a score apiece, with Darcy Thomas converting four of the tries saw the visitors home.
