PREM WEST: Carmarthen on a roll

Carmarthen Quins backs coach Aled Thomas insists his side will be going all guns blazing for league and cup glory.

Quins are on a roll having recovered from losing their opening two league fixtures by winning 10 of their last 11 games.

Their comeback was completed when they trumped Premiership West league leaders RGC 25-22 last weekend.

“It was obviously a blow losing the first two games, but we stayed positive and had belief in what we can do,” said former Scarlets outside-half Thomas.

“We want to win some silverware so we are targeting both the cup and the league. We know it’s going to be very tough, but I am happy with the squad we’ve got which I believe has enough depth.

“The win last weekend against RGC has given us a lot of belief because they have a very strong squad. If we bring our best performance we can beat anyone on any given day.”

Quins will face Llandovery in a local derby on December 23 with the winner finishing in second spot, providing RGC don’t slip up at Bridgend.

And Thomas insists his players are relishing an opportunity to complete the double over their regional rivals.

“The boys are really excited to be playing Llandovery as there is always a real edge when we play them,” he said.

“We are a small region and everyone knows one another. Also when it’s a derby the Scarlets coaches are more likely to come down and watch.

“It’s the last game before the league all comes together so a win over Llandovery is crucial in order to set us up for the rest of the season.”

Thomas is relishing his player-coach role having finally stepped away from the regional scene with the Scarlets.

“I did a bit of coaching last season when I was still playing with the Scarlets so it has made the transition easier,” he said.

“I’m a player-coach so I feel like I can see both sides of the fence which is very useful. I’m still learning, but I’m happy with how things have gone so far.”

Elsewhere in Premiership West Aberavon thrashed Llanelli 40-26, Llandovery edged out Swansea 18-14 and Bridgend won 15-8 at Neath.
