Paddy Power: France v Wales

The consolation of being involved in an all-time RBS 6 Nations thriller won’t ease the pain of opening day defeat for Wales but a stirring second half comeback means the cloud most certainly has a silver lining.

The Stade de France is the destination for Wales’ Round Two assignment and after France suffered a shock defeat in Italy, it doesn’t feel as intimidating as it might otherwise have been. Paddy Power, Official Betting Supplier to the WRU, make the Welsh the underdogs, but underdogs with a good chance of taking a bite out of the favourites.

Wales are 5/2 to win the match outright and Evens to do so with a very useful +8 point handicap.

Paris wasn’t a happy hunting ground for Wales in the 1980s or 1990s. However, that bleak era ended with the amazing 34-33 win in 1999 and since then, Wales have achieved something more approaching parity. In their last seven matches in France, they’ve won three and lost four. It’s far from a home away from home, but it gives hope of an upset.

There’s also the shock factor that comes from defeat in Rome. The clichés say Les Bleus will be desperate for revenge, but the fact is Wales can take more momentum and cause for optimism out of last week’s defeat than France. Both Wales and France are wounded animals but Rob Howley’s side could be the more energetic and enthusiastic of the two.

Those three recent Welsh wins came with an aggregate winning margin of 15 points and therefore an average of five. If Wales are to win, it will be close. If the visitors are to record a win on French soil, it won’t be by much and the Winning Margin option of Wales to win by 1-12 points at 13/5 is worth a shot. Victories over France in Cardiff and that agonising World Cup semi-final defeat of 2011 show that there’s no inferiority complex and Wales are more than capable of beating Les Bleus.

One player to look out for in the Tryscorer betting is Alex Cuthbert. He hasn’t had much RBS 6 Nations experience but he has taken to it with aplomb. In his six Championship appearances to date, he has scored four tries. He scored against Ireland last week and touched down when France came to the Millennium Stadium last year. The Blues winger is 12/1 to score the First Try on Saturday and is 3/1 to score a Try at Anytime in the Match.
