The Wizards edged out Martyn Fowler’s Blue and Blacks to secure a vital home victory to follow their home win over Bedwas earlier this season.
After what has been a disappointing campaign so far, the 11-3 win should do wonders for the confidence of everyone connected with the Wizards and they will be looking to use the win as a springboard for the rest of the season.
In a tight, gritty encounter, the two sides were level at the break with a penalty apiece. Fly half Jamie Davies moved ever closer to 4,000 points for the Wizards with an early kick at goal before opposite number Gareth Davies replied for Cardiff.
But in a scrappy second half, Davies’ score proved crucial and when his namesake, fly half Jamie, added a second penalty, the game was up.
Even more impressively, the win was secured despite Aberavon being down to 14 men for the whole of the second half.
The other Premiership game scheduled to take place this weekend, Carmarthen Quins’ visit to Newport was abandoned due to the weather.
A sodden Rodney Parade pitch was deemed unplayable and the teams will replay at a later date.
