Davies targets call-up

Aled Davies hopes his part in the Scarlets’ push for a RaboDirect PRO12 play-off place will be enough to earn him an international call-up.

The 20-year-old scrum-half has been one of the shining lights of the Scarlets campaign and has ousted Tavis Knoyle as the regions first choice No. 9.

Davies’ red-hot form has seen him emerge as a dark horse for a place on the tour of Japan, with Robin McBryde set to announce his squad on May 1.

“It is something that is in the back of my mind, it would be great to tour and challenge for a Welsh cap, but all my focus at the moment is making sure the Scarlets make the play-offs and then trying to win the league after that,” said Davies.

With Mike Phillips a shoo-in to be named in Warren Gatland’s Lions squad on Tuesday, Lloyd is set to be Wales’ first choice scrum-half.

Rhys Webb, Knoyle, Jonathan Evans, Lewis Jones and Tom Habberfield will all be in the running for a scrum-half place in the squad.

But Davies insists his priority is on the Scarlets clash with Treviso next Friday where a victory would guarantee a play-off spot.

“The boys have played really well of late. I think we have learned loads from that difficult period we had in December and January and it has made us a better team for it,” added Davies.

“We know it is going to be tough against Treviso, they are going to be coming here with nothing to lose. We are not going to take them lightly, but we feel if we turn up and play well we can beat any side.”
