The tournament, which kicks off on Friday at the Luzhniki Stadium, will see the 12-man Wales squad wear the innovative, new design against Uruguay on Friday before they play their remaining pool games on Saturday against Tonga and Fiji with the knockout stages taking place on Sunday.
The new WRU Sevens jersey is made out of the ArmourGrid fabric developed by Under Armour for its WRU national teams. The poison coloured stretch panels and dragon scale detailing accentuate the jerseys key features and compliments the fast paced WRU Sevens team.
On this kit the gold trophy is emblazoned on the right sleeve with ‘2009’ printed underneath, a proud reference to Wales’ success from four years ago in Dubai when as 80-1 outsiders, they stunned the tournament to be crowned world champions. To compliment the jersey, the shorts have the same strength in the fabrication with ArmourGrid. The striking colour combinations of the kit represents the vibrancy of the style of rugby played by the side under captain Adam Thomas.
The tonal graphite armoured grid will ensure Wales are a difficult proposition to tackle on the pitch due to the ‘’No-Grab” jersey construction.
Body mapping of the kit means that certain areas, around the inner arms and side panels, allow for extra flexibility. This is required for freedom of movement whilst still retaining extreme fabric strength in other areas and offering minimum absorption of water or sweat.
Demanding playing conditions in Moscow will severely test all the teams but Welsh players will be able to stay cool due to the ventilation panels on the underside of each sleeve.
Wales will wear the ArmourGrid technology-led design not only for this week’s Rugby World Cup, but also for the next two years in the IRB World Series.
The new specifically designed Sevens combination continues to showcase Under Armour’s continued support to the Welsh Rugby Union and their ambition to enable their teams to achieve and sustain excellence.
A replica of the new Sevens kit will be available to buy from the end of September and can be pre-ordered via https://store.wru.co.uk as well as in the WRU store.
This will be the first time a Wales Sevens shirt has been available for fans to purchase.
Lee Williams, the remaining member from Wales’ victorious side in 2009 said: “Under Armour have done a fantastic job with this new design. We all love it as a squad so hopefully we can shine as bright as the kit in Moscow.”
