The defending Rugby Sevens World Cup holders find themselves in a tough pool with Uruguay, Tonga and Fiji all gunning for the champions. Both players are in agreement when they say that defending their title is their number one priority when the 2013 tournament kicks off on Friday.

“It’s been a long journey this year but I’m just pleased to be here with the boys,” said Webber who began the season in the SWALEC League with Ystrad Rhondda.

“You don’t think of things like playing in World Cups when you play division two rugby which is what I was doing this time last year. That’s the sort of thing you can only dream about. But I’m here now and I can’t wait to get going.”

Davies’ selection for the World Cup squad proved to be the icing on the cake as his family enjoyed a triple celebration in the space of a couple of days. First his brother Jonathan was selected for the British and Irish Lions first Test team to face Australia while his sister passed her degree.

“The parents are really proud of all of us but like Alex said, it’s a dream to play for your country and the World Cup only comes around every four years so to get that opportunity means a lot to all of us,” said Davies.

“Training has really been tough but we’ve trained hard. We set goals at the start of the season, we didn’t quite reach all of them – but one of our goals is to retain the World Cup so we’re looking forward to it immensely.”

Both players are in no doubt that Wales have the firepower to retain their title which was won four years ago in Dubai.

“We’ve got to go out there and win it. We are the champions. We’ve already made one final this year (in Hong Kong) so we know we can do it. All the boys are hoping to bring the title back to Wales,” said Webber.

Davies added: “When you look at the standard of the teams competing, it’s not going to be easy. Fiji on Saturday will be a tough one, but we have to take every game as it comes. Uruguay is first up so that is our priority.”
