Cross Keys overpowered Bedwas to run out comfortable 13-45 winners at the Bridge Field after the home side fell apart in the second half.

Bedwas started the game on the front foot and their persistence was rewarded by a Richard Powell penalty. However, a Keys free kick after a Bedwas scrum offence saw wing Nathan Trowbridge cross for a try.

Bedwas wing Elliott Jones then capitalised on a mix up in the Keys defence to cross for a try which Powell converted to put his side 10-5 ahead.

Midway through the half, Bedwas lost flanker Aaron Harris to the sin bin for handling in the ruck and Keys took advantage of their extra man with lock Dan Hodge scoring a try. Bedwas tried to get back into the game but errors were creeping in and they conceded a second try whilst down to 14 men when sloppy passing in midfield led to Trowbridge crossing for his second try, Dorian Jones adding the extras for 17-7 half time lead.

The second half did not start how the home faithful would have wished. Failure to gather the Keys kick off saw the home side straight on the back foot and with the defence at sixes and sevens, Keys full back Aaron Bramwell strolled in for a try converted by Jones.

Bedwas struck back with a penalty by Powell following a high tackle after 46 minutes.

But after the referee was caught in a collision between several players and forced to leave the field with a rib injury, Jones kicked a penalty and a smart drop goal to stretch the Keys lead. Right wing Luke Williams then crossed for a Keys try converted by Jones before Hodge added his second try after intercepting a loose Bedwas pass, strolling in unopposed for replacement Angus O’Brien to convert.

With the clock running down, O’Brien added a penalty goal before his fellow replacement Luke Garrett was yellow carded in added time.

It mattered little though as there was no time for a Bedwas revival, the final whistle blowing shortly after.
