Waunarlwydd off to a flying start

Last season’s Swalec Division One West runners-up Cwmllynfell got a nasty shock on the opening day of the season as they were beaten 52-15 at Waunarlwydd.

The home side ran in six tries, with two of them from outside half Josh Hammet, as they hammered out a warning that they are prepared to improve on their fourth place finish last term as they completely dominated their visitors.

Cwmllynfell managed two tries in their response to the home onslaught and the man of the match was scrum half Lee Evans, who helped himself to 27 points with a try, five conversions and four penalties.

Newcomers Crymych and Builth Wells got an early warning about how tough their new division is going to be as they both fell to defeat away from home, Crymych went down 20-8 at Carmarthen Athletic. Full back Mike Sauro helped himself to 15 points with a try, two conversions and two penalties for the Athletic and Luke Marshall bagged their other try.

Former Championship side Whitland were given a lesson in finishing at Loughor as the home side ran out 34-6 winners. Peter Smiraglia kicked 19 points for Loughor to add to tries from Steve Wake, Jonathan Phillips and Ashley Davies. Kenfig Hill picked dup a bonus points thanks to their four tries in a 29-23 home win over Llangennech.

There were contrasting fortunes for the two relegated sides from last season’s top division as they began life in Division two West. Skewen ran in 10 tries in their 61-19 home win over Maesteg, while Aberaon Quins found themselves on the end of a seven try hiding as they went down 51-3 at Maesteg Quins.
