Despite having huge territorial advantage, Croesyceiliog were unable to pierce the strong Blaenau Gwent defence in the first half. Croesyceiliog started well, coming close to an early score but were twice caught on the break as Blaenau ran in unconverted tries from Lauren Lewis and Naomi Wybrow.
Undaunted, Croesyceiliog started the second half strongly and upped their game from the kick off. Their persistence was rewarded by a well taken try in the corner from Nadia Strange early in the second half.
Croesyceiliog were now camped in the Blaenau 22 for much of the second half and despite being urged on by skipper Kerry Jenkins and some fine line out work from hooker Louise Sheppard and jumper Lee Hatherall, a second breakthrough of the Blaenau defence failed to arrive.
As the game neared its end, Croesyceiliog were again twice caught on the break for converted tries with Lewis and Wybrow once more adding to their tally.
Despite the defeat, this was an encouraging performance from a new look Croesyceiliog team who next week travel to Gwernyfed.
New players are very welcome to give rugby a try. Training takes place on Mondays and Thursdays 7.00pm, at Woodland Road Croesyceiliog.
