Match winner Ceiron Thomas praised Cardiff full back Dan Fish after the Blue and Blacks secured their first league win of the season.

Thomas kicked 14 points as his side brushed aside Bedwas 27-9 at the Bridge Field. The Cardiff fly half, who this time last year was playing for Cornish Pirates, also set up tries for James Loxton and Luke Ford in a solid individual display.

Bedwas’ only response came via three penalties from outside half Andy Humberstone in a tactical encounter where each side’s kicking game was tested to the limit.

“In the first half we were fortunate enough to play with the wind and with Dan Fish in the side, we had two kicking options,” said Thomas.

“It helped open the field up a little bit more. That was a big factor in how the game went, it set us up for a first half lead and it meant the boys came out with some confidence after half time.

“Luckily we managed to carry it through and get the win.”

Fish, on permit from the Cardiff Blues, helped pin Bedwas back with the help of Thomas, his raking left footed kicks giving the visitors plenty of territory.

Cardiff head coach Martyn Fowler, said: “It’s invaluable having a left foot option. What I liked about Dan today was his variety. He cleared well, ran well and showed his quality.

“It was a great game but more importantly, the regional players who featured knew it was an opportunity to impress. I thought Dan and Luke Hamilton both had good games.”

Cardiff started their season with a defeat away to Llandovery but with Thomas providing a guiding light at 10, the Blue and Blacks are targeting a play-off spot.

“At the moment I’m really enjoying my rugby. It’s a good group of boys down at the Arms Park and Martyn has created a really good environment,” said Thomas.

“Hopefully at the end of the season we’ll be lucky enough to reach the play-offs.”

Fowler was especially pleased after seeing his side secure a win over his old side.

He added: “We’ve got problem solvers all over the team. We’ve got a group of players who, if plan A isn’t working, will execute plan B.

“The training ground transference today was really pleasing. We just didn’t give Bedwas any first phase ball so their 10 had no option but to kick.”
