Bridgend off and running

Bridgend Ravens got their season up and running, securing their first win with a home victory over Aberavon.

Ben Rose’s side had started their campaign with four straight defeats but a brace from Tom Grabham and a penalty try helped secure a much needed 34-16 win.

It meant the Ravens gained revenge on their defeat to regional rivals Aberavon earlier this season, the Wizards victorious in a British & Irish Cup qualifier.

This time around, Aberavon had posted the first points through centre Aaron Jones, but the Ravens swiftly hit back to take the lead via two James Dixon penalties.

Discipline was lacking early on, both sides giving away penalties before Jones slotted his second kick to tie up the scores. The infringements continued to come at pace and Aberavon then saw Ian Moore receive a yellow card, just yards from their own line. From the resulting penalty, Bridgend drove a scrum over the line for a deserved penalty try.

The rest of the period was dominated by the kickers, Jones kicking a penalty before Dixon put his side clear with two late efforts.

With a 10 point lead at the break, Bridgend knew a fast start to the second period could see them secure a comfortable advantage. It did not happen. Lock Lloyd Peers was yellow carded and with a man advantage, Aberavon pushed themselves forward for a penalty try which Jones converted.

The game was now poised on a knife edge, but some excellent defending by Bridgend stopped Aberavon seizing the initiative. Dixon comfortably dispatched another penalty and from there on in, the Ravens dominated the game. Luke Morgan released Grabham for a sensational try, Dixon again slotting the conversion.

There was still time for more. Despite seeing Nathan Edwards yellow carded, another moment of brilliance from the Bridgend backline saw Grabham cross for his second try and secure a comfortable win.
