Coleg Y Cymoedd put down a statement of intent with victory over Coleg Sir Gar on Wednesday afternoon, Director of Rugby Clive Jones rightly pleased with his side’s performance.

With the Cardiff Arms Park surface suitable for some free flowing rugby, Cymoedd took advantage with three quick tries at the start of the second half blowing Sir Gar away.

It meant the home side secured a 36-23 victory, one which ended Sir Gar’s previously unbeaten record and gave Cymoedd a superb start to stage two of the WRU Wednesday Under 18 League.

“The intent to play from the boys was very good and we played our way to victory rather than just kicking it,” said Jones.

“It means we’re good to watch. The way we play means there will be some mistakes but overall, I’m glad we stuck to our principles. It was a deserved win and I’m obviously pleased overall.

“Sir Gar have been out there on their own for some time now and now we’re chasing them. We set the boys a goal to win this game and they’ve done that. It’s a massive step for us inside the camp and it’s a big statement of intent.”

Cymoedd skipper Liam Belcher, who has featured in the Pontypridd squad this season, was equally delighted.

“I’m ecstatic, I couldn’t ask any more of the boys,” he said.

“There were a few dropped balls but you can’t fault the effort we put in as a team. In the second half we said we’d keep going and dig deep throughout the rest of the game. We did that and it’s really pleasing. I think we’ve definitely made a statement.”

In the other games to take place in the Cup competition, Neath Port Talbot College secured an impressive 19-15 away win over Coleg Gwent. Both sides scored three tries apiece but it was Neath Port Talbot who came out on top with full back Joe Gage crossing for a brace of tries. Wing Josh Ferriman also scored with two conversions from Paul Edwards securing victory.

At Parc Eirias, another superb individual performance from full back Morgan Williams failed to stop Coleg Llandrillo falling to defeat to Bridgend College. Williams converted his own try and kicked a penalty but it was Bridgend who edged themselves to a 13-10 victory.

In the Trophy competition, Llandovery College ran in four tries in a 25-16 win over Gower College. Wingers Josh Hodson and Alasdair Mackinnon did the damage, the latter scoring twice as Llandovery pulled away after half time.

The final game saw Cowbridge Comprehensive bounce back from last week’s defeat to Coleg Llandrillo. Matt Silva’s side proved too much for Pembrokeshire Schools to handle in a 58-10 win.
