Lyn Jones’ side host the reigning RaboDirect PRO12 Champions at Rodney Parade on Friday night knowing that a bonus-point victory could see them move level with Leinster in the table.
And while the 40-17 reverse in Swansea was another away day disappointment, the Dragons have won all five home fixtures so far this season, with three domestic successes sandwiched between a pre-season friendly win over Bath and an Amlin Challenge Cup thrashing of Mogliano.
There have clearly been plenty of positive signs for the Dragons under Jones’ stewardship – particularly in Newport – and Leinster boss Matt O’Connor is expecting an almighty challenge in Round 7.
“The Dragons will be determined to get back to winning ways after their defeat to the Ospreys and they are a side who have progressed this year,” said O’Connor, who should have Ireland openside Shane Jennings, Springbok full back Zane Kirchner and Wallaby wing Lote Tuqiri back fighting fit.
“They have recruited well through the likes of Kris Burton and they also have some emerging indigenous talent who are starting to get recognition at national level.
“Andrew Coombs is an impressive leader for them up front, Dan Evans is an attacking threat out wide and under Lyn Jones they have brought a more expansive approach to their play this year.
“They freshened things up last weekend against the Ospreys and they could make a few more changes which is a signal of their depth and proof that they’re very much a club headed in the right direction.
“Overall we’re in pretty good shape for the game in Newport which will pose a big challenge for us.We’re delighted to have the likes of Jenno (Shane Jennings) and Zane (Kirchner) back in the frame because we’re going to need a few experienced heads over in Newport in a ground which has traditionally been a difficult place for Leinster to go to and win. The prognosis on Lote (Tuqiri) is good after his hamstring injury and we’re confident that he’ll be available for selection.”
The Dragons currently sit seventh in the table, just one place below Leinster having won three of their six league games to date.
Friday’s fixture is a chance for them to show once again that they are capable of competing for a play-off spot this season but, if they lose to Leinster and results go against them elsewhere, they could see the Scarlets, Blues, Treviso or Edinburgh jump above them prior to the two-week break for LV= Cup action.
