Burnell: Plenty more to come

There’s plenty more to come from London Welsh according to head coach Justin Burnell, after the Exiles made it seven wins from seven with a 22-7 victory Bristol to go five points clear at the top of the Greene King IPA Championship table.

Welsh took their chances at the Kassam with tries from Alex Davies, Seb Stegmann and Ollie Stedman, with Ross Johnston replying for the away side, who remain in second place.

“I still think we’re only playing at 75 per cent of our ability, which is a big difference to where we were against Plymouth at home. I thought we were only 65 per cent there, so we are getting better,” said Burnell.

“I’m happy with the second half performance and happy with the win. We knew Bristol would come with the intent to score tries. We kept them to one try today and once again just happy with the progress we’re making.”

Burnell, though, was keen to stress, just as he had pre-match, that Sunday’s result will have no bearing on the season as whole.
“The league wasn’t going to be won or lost today. We put the same amount of effort in whether we’re playing Bedford or Plymouth, and that same approach was given to Bristol. We’re very respectful to all our opposition,” he said.

“But what a fantastic advert to Championship rugby – it was pretty end-to-end. Some good players on show and a brilliant advert for open rugby.”

There was also a debut for new London Welsh signing Ian Nimmo. The former Cornish Pirates second row started the game before replaced in the second half.

“I was very pleased with him. He gives you a big physical presence but what I like about him is his outlook. He joined us at the start of the week and from day one he’s been a major part of the environment, and his work ethic is fantastic. He fits in very well with us,” said Burnell.

The Exiles are back at the Kassam Stadium next Sunday when bottom placed side Ealing are the visitors. Welsh’s approach, however, will be exactly the same.

“Turn up for work on a Monday morning, work hard and the rewards will come at the end of the week. Our philosophy is doing the hard work, being positive and being very respectful of the opposition,” said Burnell.
