Dragons’ best yet says Jones

Newport Gwent Dragons boss Lyn Jones says Friday night’s win over Bordeaux-Begles was by far the best of his regime.

Jones took over at Rodney Parade during the summer and has already overseen big victories over the likes of Ulster, the Scarlets, London Wasps and Glasgow Warriors as his side started the season with seven successes in 14 competitive games.

Victory over Glasgow at Scotstoun was a huge shock to most given that the Warriors had been beaten just once in the league prior to that late November loss but Jones has no doubt that the bonus point destruction of Bordeaux topped even that triumph.

Jones saw his side score five tries in a 40-24 win at Rodney Parade as the Dragons kept up the pressure on Pool 2 leaders Bath ahead of this week’s trip to France and the Round 5 clash with the English giants in Newport.

“I was pleased with every player’s performance. It was, with a shadow of a doubt, our best performance of the season,” said Jones, who knows they will have to match that display at the Stade André Moga on Thursday.

“To score five tries was a big plus because Bordeaux-Bègles are a very strong side. I’m delighted we played with such tempo and intensity, scoring five excellent tries.

“We came so close to beating Munster last week and we had been sharpening up our attack and that came through against Bordeaux-Bègles.

“Back to back games are always difficult and I expect them to be a bit cleverer against us on Thursday – the French are very clever people.

“But if we can go into the Bath game in good condition then it’s going to take qualification down to the wire.”

The Dragons currently sit second in Pool 2, three points behind leaders Bath at the halfway stage of the campaign.

With Bath facing Italian outfit Mogliano at The Rec next week, the Dragons are likely to need another win over Bordeaux-Begles to keep pace and to retain the possibility of qualification being in their own hands when it comes to the final round of action next month.
