Llanelli escape with derby win

Luke Price had the chance to become an overnight hero in Swansea, but unfortunately fluffed his lines with a last gasp conversion that allowed arch-rivals Llanelli to escape with a 30-29 Principality Premiership triumph at St Helen’s

In the only Premiership game to survive the deluge in south Wales, the visitors started as firm favourites and kicked-off their afternoon with a try within 22 seconds of the start. After such a confident opening it was no surprise that they opened up a 24-9 lead early in the second half.

It was outside half Jordan Williams who sparked the sensational start for Llanelli as he gathered the kick-off, broke clean through the middle before firing out a pass to former Dragons wing Mike Poole, who raced over for the first of the game’s six tries.

A crowd of more than 1,000 watched the game and it looked as though the relegation threatened All Whites were going to get little or nothing out of the game as the score built against them. Back row man Dan Thomas crossed for a second Llanelli try and Williams added a second conversion to an earlier penalty.

Luke Price kicked three penalties for the home side to make it 17-9 at the break, but Llanelli increased their advantage when Poole race clear for his second try which Williams converted. That made the gap 15 points between two teams at different ends of the Premiership table.

Price and Williams then swapped penalties before the home revival began to kick-in. Three tries flowed from the battling All Whites, from prop Tom Sloane, wing Richard Williams and replacement lock Teaghan Price, and Luke Price added one conversion.

It meant the home side sneaked the second half 20-13 – Jordan Williams landed a third penalty in the second half to complete the Llanelli scoring – but one losing bonus point could have been so much more had the final conversion hit the mark.
