Dee raring to go

Wales Under 20 hooker Elliot Dee says he is raring to go for this year’s Six Nations.

The Newport Gwent Dragons man was a key figure for the side last season as they reached the final of the Junior World Championship and finished as runners-up in the Six Nations.

Reaching the final in France completed a hugely successful year for the junior Wales side but Dee is looking forward to trying to improve even further in 2014.

“When you do so well, as we did last year, you always want to try and better it,” he said.

“We’ve set ourselves a hard target to try and beat it but that’s what we want to try and do and go one step further.

“It’s boosted my confidence a lot to have played regional rugby for the Dragons. I hadn’t played at that level this time last season and I’ve already experienced quite a lot even though we’re only half way through this year. I’m definitely ready to go.”

As he did last year, Dee faces a fight to stat in the hooking berth with Ethan Lewis and Scott Otten providing the competition this time around. New head coach Byron Hayward has named a 31-man squad full of fresh, young talent. Only eight of those involved have previous Wales Under 20 caps.

“Things are pretty much the same as last year,” said Dee.

“We’ve got a great work ethic in the squad and it’s a case of carrying those same standards on into the future.

“It’s going to be another hard battle this year for the hooker’s jersey. I want to nail down my place in the side, hopefully be a bit of a leader for the team and try and set a bit of an example for the new guys coming in.

“We’ve got the three Blues up in north Wales and we always get a great following up there with some great support.

“We start off against Italy but if we take care of our own performances then the results will take care of themselves.”
