Playing a prominent role at hooker in an all action display, Hughes was everywhere both in attack and defence as he helped guide his sided to a 25-12 win. It meant that Llandovery took home the Trophy in this year’s tournament.
Going into the game at Llandovery College, both the home side and visitors Cowbridge knew that a win would see them earn silverware.
But it was Iestyn Thomas’ Llandovery who came out on top, outscoring their opponents by four tries to two.
Hughes crossed for the last of those four efforts to complete the scoring, adding to earlier tries from centre Adam Turner, scrum half Harry Randall and replacement James Davies.
Davies kicked a conversion and a penalty to complete the scoring.
Backs Josh Thomas and Josh Rodgers replied for Cowbridge and although the Vale of Glamorgan side added a conversion through Thomas, it was not enough.
Llandovery Director of Rugby Thomas had spoken before the match of the need to take home the Trophy after missing out on qualification for the Cup competition. After watching his side do just that, he said: “It was an outstanding display from the boys. We played really well in what was a tight game and we did well to move them around the pitch.
“Cowbridge are an excellent side and it was a fierce contest but we did well to vary our point of attack. I’m very pleased for the boys and the college as a whole and it’s always nice to win a trophy.”
