Whitehouse, a 23-year-old police officer with the Gwent force who hails from Llanmorlais on the Gower was selected by the four home Unions after a string of impressive performances in the competition and also comes shortly after refereeing the final of the Junior World Trophy in Hong Kong when Japan beat Tonga.

On his selection, Whitehouse said, “It is an honour to be selected to officiate the British & Irish Cup final in Dublin and I would like to thank everyone who has supported me this year in my refereeing. I am really looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Nigel Owens the WRU referees academy coach said: “It’s great to see our young referees being rewarded for the performance and commitment they have shown over the years. Ben has no doubt been one of the successes of our academy system and hopefully this will encourage other youngsters to take up the whistle, I wish him well for the final.”

Whitehouse will be assisted by two fellow Welsh officials Wayne Davies and Martyn Lewis
