Ahead of Wales’ opening autumn match at the home of Welsh sport, the home and away team took the field together with poppies embroidered on the right sleeves of their shirts.
Team captains Sam Warburton and Michael Hooper laid wreaths on the half way line before lining up to face the President’s Box where the Vice Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, The Duke of Cambridge, was situated.Â
The sounding of the Last Post was made by a bugler of the Royal Welsh Regiment band before the Teams and a 55,000 plus crowd observed a period of silence.
During which time the names of the Welsh and Australian rugby internationals killed in conflict were scrolled on the big screens that later showed the full match action. Â Â Â
In and around the stadium there was a bucket collection for The Afghanistan Trust, a charity that helps to support soldiers and the families of those who have been killed or wounded while serving in Afghanistan.
To mark the centenary of World War One, the WRU has also commissioned a documentary on the 13 Wales internationals killed in the First World War which will be screened on ITV Wales on Tuesday.
