Newport born Evans has had an ongoing issue with his wrist and recent examinations and scans confirmed the 27-year-old required immediate surgery. Dragons medical staff have confirmed that the rehabilitation process will take several months.

In his South Wales Argus column, he said: “I face a new challenge now and it will be hard to be on the sidelines while the boys are in action in the Guinness Pro12 and a European quarter-final, which is one of the hardest things to miss out on.

“It’s going to be a frustrating period for but it’s one of the risks of the job, unfortunately injury is just part and parcel of being a rugby player. Supporting the region in as many ways as possible off the pitch is now on the cards.”

Evans has been a key component of the Dragons pack, who have powered their team into the quarter-finals of the European Rugby Challenge Cup. He will miss the last eight clash with Cardiff Blues and the Dragons’ PRO12 run-in.

Centre Ross Wardle also under went surgery, three weeks ago on his shoulder, which he injured during the game against Zebre. Wardle is progressing well through the early stages of his rehabilitation.
