Lloyd Williams is hoping Cardiff Blues’ back-to-basics approach can spark a late charge up the Guinness PRO12.

The Blues scrum-half delivered a man-of-the-match performance in the regions’ 21-15 triumph over Edinburgh on Sunday. He darted through to cross for the opening score at the BT Sport Arms Park, and he reckons a simplified approach can bring more late-season success.

He said: “At times we do get ourselves into a rut and we try to play in our own half a bit too much which often results in a penalty and points for the opposition. We wanted to keep it simple and get the result against Edinburgh.

“It’s just about getting ourselves further up the league after the victory against Edinburgh and we have a quarter-final to look forward to. Not much has needed to be changed, just small things that were lacking from our game.”

The victory moved the Blues above the Newport Gwent Dragons and up to ninth in the PRO12 with six matches left to play. They face another home test this weekend against Connacht, who occupy the final European Champions Cup position.

But Williams reckons they can continue their resurgence if the players lead the charge. He said: “We spoke about taking ownership in the game, Paul and Dale have taken the reins but the players have had to take a lot of responsibility because we’re the ones on the pitch.

“Paul John and Dale McIntosh have a great working relationship, they’ve been together for years and years so they know what they want to get out of us. They changed little things, keeping it simple was a big thing, and we stuck to the gameplan well.”
