Lethal weapons ensure Wales title

The lethal finishing prowess of outside backs Luke Morgan and Kristian Phillips ensured Wales didn’t leave the Glasgow Sevens empty handed at the weekend.

Defeats on Saturday at Scotstoun Stadium to eventual Cup winners Fiji (40-17) and hosts Scotland (12-7) ensured Wales dropped down to the Bowl on day two.

Wales finished day one on a positive note, beating Portugal 42-7 with Tom Williams and Dan Fish bagging a brace of tries each with Will Harries and Phillips adding one apiece.

Possession proved to be key in the Bowl quarter-final against the big hitting Samoa side. It took a moment of magic from Phillips, who from a standing start, burst through the Samoan defence to score what was to prove the only try of the game in a fiercely competitive 5-0 win for Jevon Groves’ side.

The semi-final against France proved just as tough. The game was locked up at 5-5 at half time with Rhodri Davies replying to a Jerry Aicardy touchdown.

The Welsh defence was heroic as France threw everything at them. With time running out, Harries raced over to give Angus O’Brien an easy conversion to send Wales through to the Bowl final with a gutsy 12-5 win.

Argentina must have fancied their chances of coming away victorious in the Bowl final, leading7-0 at the break thanks to a converted try by Segundo Tuculet.

But Wales rallied and played the conditions perfectly. Morgan got Wales back into the game when he struck in the corner.

With the game in the balance, out of nowhere Craig Price kicked a monster clearance kick downfield and Morgan’s scorching pace saw him pounce on the ball to earn Wales a remarkable 12-7 victory.

A delighted Wales head coach Gareth Williams was full of praise for his side which remained unbeaten on day two and only conceded 12 points from their three games.

“It was a pleasing conclusion to the week in Glasgow. We performed well throughout the weekend and were frustrated to have lost such a tight game against Scotland in the group stage.

“The response on day two was very encouraging and there were three very accurate performances given the conditions.

“Our ambition is to be competing in the main Cup competition, but this is another step which proves that a group of players, very much in its infancy on the Sevens circuit as a group, are progressing and putting lessons in to place. It is vital we harness this and carry it in to Twickenham.

“It doesn’t get any easier in the final round of the World Series at Twickenham this weekend.

“We find ourselves in a very exciting group to contest in London. New Zealand are chasing another Series title and Australia have been contesting for the top four places all year, therefore they will be hugely challenging. Japan have given teams throughout the World Series difficult periods all year, and they will be determined to finish the season as strongly as possible.”
