A hat trick of tries from Aaron Warren, a brace from Player of the Tournament Will Thomas, along with further scores from Jack Maynard and Aron Evans, and a terrific defensive effort ensured a victorious repeat of last year’s Cup final for the Drovers.
Ponty were only able to add a single try from veteran sevens international Rhys Shellard early in the second half.
Llandovery captain Matthew Jacobs said, “Last year was special to win the Foster’s 7s for the first time but to retain it against Ponty is fantastic. It’s the first time we’ve done to do the double on Ponty so it’s a great feeling for the boys.
“The boys’ effort was outstanding today – we only conceded four tries today which is something we are very proud of. We are a close team, we know how each other plays, we showed today we’ve got the pace and strength in depth to beat the best teams in the Premiership.
“We showed character to put 40 plus points on some of the best teams in the Premiership. We will enjoy tonight then try to put this form into the Premiership starting next weekend.”
Llandovery had earlier beaten Carmarthen Quins 31-12 in Round One, Ebbw Vale 47-0, and Cross Keys 21-7 in the semi-finals, while Pontypridd beat Welsh Students 31-12 in Round One, Swansea 21-17 in the Cup quarter-final and Aberavon 28-17 in the last four.
In the Foster’s Plate Final, Llanelli also held onto their title, beating rivals Neath 31-14.
The Scarlets side scored five tries through Greg George, Josh Guy, Dion Jones, captain Justin James and Andrew Spowart, to two for the Welsh All Blacks, scored by Cameron Morris and Will Thomas.
After losing 26-7 to Cross Keys in Round One, Llanelli then saw off Bridgend 29-19 in the Plate quarter-finals and Welsh Exiles 34-7 in the Plate semis. After losing 28-7 to Aberavon in Round One, Neath beat RGC 21-19 in the Plate quarters and Cardiff 29-7 in the last four.
Llanelli captain Justin James said, “It’s been a long but amazing day. We started off slow but boys came together and showed some good skills and some flair too. It’s been a good period for playing sevens on the back of the Singha Sevens too.”
Scarlets sides lifted all three trophies up for grabs on the day, the first going to the Scarlets Ladies who overcame the Ospreys and then the Blues with some highly entertaining rugby. In a great advert for the women’s game, the Scarlets beat the Blues 26-14 to lift the Radler’s Women’s trophy.
They scored four impressive tries, a brace each for captain Sioned Harries and Lucy Demaine. The Blues added two quality scores of their own for Rafiuke Taylor and Kat Lemon but the West Walians proved too strong and added the sevens title to their 15-a-side victory earlier in the season. They had earlier overcome the Ospreys 24-19.
Sioned Harries commented, “At the start of the season we become regional 15-a-side champions so to do the double is amazing. It’s rare for us to get to play at a venue like this in front of a good crowd and all the girls embraced that today. It was a great effort by everyone, we were able to showcase our talent and more people are aware now of what women’s rugby is all about.”
