The comprehensive victory at the Bridge Field condemned the Black & Ambers to their second successive defeat and enabled Bedwas to overtake Ebbw Vale and move to the top of the pool with 16 points from three wins out of four starts. The Steelmen are second with 12 points.

The two teams are due to meet again at the same venue in the Principality Premiership this weekend and Bedwas coach Steve Law was buoyant after a decisive home win.

“We have given ourselves a huge confidence boost ahead of the league. We can expect significant changes to both team line ups and we will take nothing for granted,” said Law.

Tries from Sam Feehan, Mike Callow and Keiron Jenkins, two of which James Dixon converted, gave the home side a 22-0 interval lead and they simply piled on the pressure in the second half with three more tries.

Iwan Phillips crossed for the bonus point try after the break before Man of the Match Feehan crashed over for a second try. Adam Williams added the sixth try and Dixon notched his fifth conversion to complete the scoring.

Pontypridd ensured they came out on top in Pool 2 to qualify for the quarter-finals thanks to their 16-14 home win over Aberavon. Two tries from Wayne O’Connor proved the difference between the two teams in the end in a close fought contest.

Pontypridd took an early lead when O’Connor crossed for his first try and Lewis Williams added the conversion. O’Connor’s second try shortly before half time meant Ponty went into the interval with a 14-0 lead.

The home side lost scrum half Joel Raikes to a yellow card before half-time, but his half back partner Williams was able to increase the lead to 16 points shortly after the restart with a simple penalty. The Wizards, however, hit back in the second half with two tries of their own from wing Morgan Williams, one of which Steff Williams converted.
