Tipuric makes happy return for Ospreys

Justin Tipuric successfully negotiated his first game back since suffering concussion playing for Wles in the RBS 6 Nations as he helped the Ospreys beat Belgium 71-0 in Waterloo.

The 43-times capped flanker had to sit out the summer tour to New Zealand as he recovered from a fall at the tail of a line-out against Italy in Cardiff. He hit his head so hard when he came down that his vision was affected.

But the 27-year-old declared on Ospreys TV before the trip to Belgium that “I’m fit, raring to go and looking forward to being back on the field.” He played a part in a number of the Ospreys 11 tries in the game at Stde du Pachy that enabled the Welsh region to make it two wins in a row in their pre-season campaign.

“I obviously didn’t have the nicest of times with the injury. I had a few, well documented problems which you wouldn’t really have wanted, but everything’s good now.

“The Ospreys, Wales and the specialists have all looked after me and been great to me and gone through the right channels. I’ve had the all clear and I’m looking forward to playing again.

“The first couple of games are always tough while you try to get your match fitness up. It has been a good training camp in Waterloo.”

Wales Under 20 wing Keelan Giles helped himself to a hat-trick of tries and there were also trebles for fellow Under 20 Grand Slammer Joe Thomas and Tom Williams. Luke Price kicked eight conversions.

The win came hot on the heels of their home triumph over Leicester Tigers, who they travel to face at Welford Road next weekend, and the visitors scored 57 points in the first-half. Giles opened the scoring after only six minutes and other tries came from hooker Hugh Gustafson and wing Dafydd Howells

Building towards their first Guinness PRO12 game of the season against Zebre at the Liberty Stadium on Friday, 2 September, the Ospreys integrated a few more senior players into their side and expect to be nearer to full strength for their second clash with the Tigers on Friday night.
