The home side had targeted the fixture for a major upset after posting good wins over Pembrokeshire College and Cardiff & Vale College, but all they could muster on home turf were three penalties from the boot of outside half Cai Evans.
If anyone thought Cymoedd might be there for the taking this season after they were beaten by Coleg Sir Gar in a repeat of last season’s final, then this performance from Alun Lawrence’s side will have made them think again.
Despite falling behind to the first of Evans’ three penalties, they took a firm grip on proceedings through their pack and led 17-6 at the break.
Tries from hooker Ieuan Morris, centre Rhys Davies and scrum half Jamie Hill put Cymoedd in the ascendancy and there were further scores from flanker Simon Edwards and replacement prop Tom Devine. Outside half Cavan Slade added two conversions, but missed with four other kicks at goal.
The other games in the Cup competition saw Cardiff & Vale College overpower Coleg Gwent 32-13 as they outscored them by four tries to one. Wing Tom Meehan helped himself to two of the home tries and scrum half Cameron Corsi and full back Dan Schwartz got the others.
Tony Lamerton chipped in with nine points from the boot, and Ben Thomas kicked a penalty, while scrum half Caelon May crossed for the Gwent try. His half-back partner Evan Lloyd added the conversion and kicked two penalties.
Gower College picked up a bonus point in their 27-3 home win over Pembrokeshire College to move into third place and stay in touch with last season’s finalists in the race for a place in the showpiece final at the Principality Stadium.
In the Trophy tournament, Glantaf ran in four tries in a 23-5 home win over the previously unbeaten Neath & Port Talbot College as they made light of having two players sent to the sin-bin. Skipper and centre Sion O’Brien scored two of the tries and the others were bagged by prop Adam Conway and No 8 Owen Jones.
Llandovery College notched a big win over visiting Whitchurch HS as they ran in five tries in a 31-3 triumph. Hooker and skipper Ianto Jones led the way with the opening score after 10 minutes and it was 12-3 to the home side at half-time after wing Hector Roberts had added a second try.
Three more tries flowed in the final quarter as the home side ran away with the spoils to notch their first win of the campaign. Full back Tomi Lewis was another of the Llandovery try scorers.
Newport HS ran out 33-11 winners at Bridgend College with tight head prop Josh Reynolds crossing twice in the first-half. There were three other tries for the visitors from wings Harley Painter and James McCarthy and replacement scrum half Dan Babos.
All the home points were scored by Bridgend outside half Rhys Bridgeman, who converted both of his tries.
