Fly half Chris Anderson converted both tries and added three penalties and a drop goal, while Wales under-21 cap Hal Luscombe crossed for Newport and former Llandovery fly half Rhys Gosling converted.
Llanelli were on song to defeat Caerphilly by 52-12 with skipper Tal Selly leading the way with three tries, followed by Bryn Griffiths, Chris Rowe, Josh Freeman, Glyn Davies and Ceirin Jones with fly half Dan Smith goaling six of them. Caerphilly replied with two tries by David Reid, one converted by Michael Thomas.
Swansea gained a 23-7 home win over Bridgend with international centre Matthew Brayley, who recently appeared for Carmarthen Quins, scoring one try and lock Joe Purcell also went over with fly half Gareth James placing two conversions and three penalties. Bridgend’s reply was a try by lively flanker Dan Fitzgerald, who has appeared for Tondu seniors this season and it was converted by a former Tondu back Lloyd Warner.
Neath also were home winners, defeating Pontypridd by 27-11 with fly half Peter Smriglia, the first player in senior rugby to reach 200 points this season, landing four penalty goals, but not converting the tries by prop Paul James, centre John Leyshon and replacement scrum half Gareth James. Treorchy fly half David Owen kicked a penalty and drop goal for Pontypridd and centre Matthew Nutall scored a try.
Ebbw Vale’s Steelers Under-21 side played a friendly at Oakdale and won 20-14 in freezing conditions. Oakdale led 9-6 at the break after the Steelers scored with a Ross Watts penalty and a drop goal by Adam Sliczny. In the second half Oakdale scored a try tolead 14-6 before the Steelers wing Richard Jenkins turned the match by intercepting on his own line and running way for a try that Watts converted. Ebbw Vale then took the lead with a try by centre Matthew Griffiths that Watts again converted. Lock Damian Hudd was picked as man of the match.
