The 120 times capped Wales captain is confident Warren Gatland’s side are in a good place after an unbeaten Under Armour Autumn series. And he insists Wales’ strength in depth augers well for a successful World Cup campaign.
“You look at the strength in depth we’ve got in certain areas whether it be wing, back-row, second-row,” said Jones.
“The number of players to come back in the back-row in particular who have been injured is really exciting.
“There’s a tremendous appetite for success throughout the squad and we are very keen to build on our autumn form. Every country wants to win the World Cup but it comes down to the players we’ve got. Look at the players we’ve got in our squad although form and fitness will be key.”
Despite the World Cup being at the back of his mind Jones’ is full attention is on helping the Ospreys reach the Guinness PRO14 play-off’s. And Jones believes the Ospreys have the potential to become a force in the PRO14.
“It doesn’t matter how young or old you are and whatever jersey you wear, you realise the derby games prick up the hairs on the backs of people’s necks,” said the 33-year-old.
“There’s allegiances to clubs, but you are also pitting yourself against someone else who’s going to be putting his hand up for selection in a red jersey. They are great occasions and I still enjoy being available for selection.
“A lot of guys had shown potential or glimpses of it in the past but now they’re getting an opportunity to play. You need to have a consistent time to play and a few guys have had that and put their hands up.”
