Williams led his country out for the clash with the Pacific Islanders as he reached a half century of Test appearances in fine fashion.
The 27-year-old scored a stunning, acrobatic first try and added the last of Wales’ 10 scores in a thrilling 74-24 success.
“It was very emotional. When Dan Biggar said congratulations to me as I ran out for the anthems, I had to fight back the tears,” said Williams as he reflected on a day to remember.
“To win my 50th cap and score two tries makes it a superb afternoon. It’s a great honour and something I’m very, very proud of. Hopefully there are many more caps to come.
“Once I started singing the national anthem I was able to put the emotion behind me and focus on the game and then once the first kick happened, my head was on the match.”
Williams benefited from fine approach work from Tyler Morgan and Wales debutant Jonah Holmes for his first try.
He finished it in the corner in spectacular fashion.
“With the try I just tried to stay in the air for as long as possible because if that’s the case and you’re out of touch, the ball is still in play,” said the Saracens superstar.
“I put my body in the air, reached down, and stuck it out. It wasn’t a bad try! I’m happy with that one and it’s another five points on the board.”
Wales also scored through a penalty try, man of the match Biggar, Steffan Evans, Tomos Williams, Morgan, Cory Hill, Aled Davies and Rhys Patchell.
And there was still time late on for Liam Williams to make it a double for the afternoon as he crossed for the last of Wales’ tries.
“We had a great first 20, but then I thought we took our foot off the gas and let Tonga back into the game in the second 20 of the first half,” he said.
“We came out in the second half and we were all guns blazing. We knew it would open up and Tonga would tire, and we took advantage of that.
“As a team we could have done more, but it’s three from three now which is superb and whoever is picked next week will look to go out there and make it four from four against South Africa next weekend.
“That would be amazing.”
