He Said What??

After another big weekend of European Rugby for our sides…hear what the players and coaches said…

Pontypridd coach Lynn Howells:

‘I said to the boys in the dressing room afterwards to score more than 80 points takes some doing, no matter who the opposition are.

‘The tie was over as a contest last week but you can’t write off a side like that.

‘To be fair to Roma they dug in and showed a lot of heart. They just didn’t have the quality of player but they lacked nothing in effort.’

Neath captain Gareth Llewellyn:

‘At the end of the day when you are in a European competition of this standard games are won and lost on small decisions.

‘We spilled the ball twice in their 22 in the first half and Duncan Jones had a good try disallowed – the referee said he made two movements but that was rubbish. It is a definite opportunity gone.’

Swansea coach John Connolly:

‘We’ve had five Welsh defeats in this round and a win and a draw the previous weekend and the problem is people don’t look below the surface on the issues.

‘People have to look at the big picture. A lot of people that support the game in Wales get frustrated, but the structure of rugby isn’t here.

‘Until we get a structure in place that develops players coming through, we are going to be having these conversations next season and the season after next.’

Llanelli director of rugby Gareth Jenkins:

‘I thought we played well enough to win the game but in the end individual errors cost us. The players are very disappointed but we’ll just have to bounce back from this.

‘We dominated the game and we’ll just have to pick ourselves up for the Celtic League game against Ulster on Friday.’

Bridgend director of coaching Allan Lewis:

‘We are pleased to have come good in this match to show what we can do.

‘It was a magnificent team effort. The pack were outstanding and I want to give all praise to hooker Ben Phillips, who came in only last Thursday, and to Shawn Van Rensburg.

‘Shawn has tremendous skill and explosive speed.’

Newport coach Leigh Jones:

‘You never say die!

‘It’s looking bleak but Toulouse were a quality side and we have to be positive about what we brought to the game.

‘It is not the time for a knee-jerk reaction and we have to get the best out of the players we have here.’

Caerphilly coach Mark Ring:

‘This was a magnificent show by my boys and they were so unlucky to lose.

‘We scored great tries and if we had hit the target with our kicks we would have walked it.

‘Now we are looking forward to our Celtic League games especially the first game against Munster.’

Cardiff coach Dai Young:

‘We have to put our hands up and say we were beaten by the better team.

‘We were never really in the game and from one to 15 we were simply outplayed. Realistically with such a young and inexperienced squad we knew the Heineken Cup was going to be a big step up and that’s how it proved here.’
