Giving away almost a year in age per man, Wales started poorly as Scotland scored tries by hooker Ross Ford (Borders) and wing Nicholas De Luca (Heriot’s FP) against a penalty by outside half and captain Gareth McCarthy (Whitchurch HS, Cardiff).

A penalty by fly half Paul-Michael Ker (Watsonians) put Scotland 13-3 ahead, but Wales were improving and McCarthy scored a try and placed a further penalty goal.

With locks Will Waldron (Hartpury College) and Justin Benfield (St David’s College) winning good lineout ball and wings Will Johnstone (Crickhowell HS) and Chris Czekaj (St David’s College) running strongly, Wales were held up pnly by the tackling of Scotland full back Brian Archibald (Stirling County).
In the final quarter, McCarthy sent a penalty and a drop goal wide as Scotland gained their second successive win in these fixtures, having edged home by 25-22 in Edinburgh last season.

An interesting figure to Welsh eyes was the Scotland coach Eamonn John, who was a popular figure when playing scrum half for Cardiff Youth, Glamorgan Wanderers and Newbridge.

On the Scotland side, both Ker and lock Sean Tomes (Gateshead) were sons of former senior international players.
