Cardiff Blues wing Adams has five tries in four games so far and has helped Wales to four straight wins which saw them finish top of Pool D. Next up is a quarter-final clash with France on Sunday.
Adams, 24, has crossed against Georgia, scored a hat-trick against Fiji, and also added another try against Uruguay. He stands on five tries alongside Japan’s Kotaro Matsushima.
New Zealand legend Jonah Lomu, South African speedster Bryan Habana and Lomu’s fellow All Black Julian Savea are the joint record holders for total tries scored at a World Cup with eight. Wales’ tournament best belongs to Shane Williams who scored six tries in France in 2007.
Adams said: “It wouldn’t be bad to join that list, would it? There are some legends there. It’s always nice to get a try. I was obviously happy to get another one against Uruguay.
“It’s five now and I was told Shane is the record holder for Wales at a World Cup with six.
“Fingers crossed with three more games to go hopefully I can pip him. We’ll wait and see.”
Adams made his Wales debut in February 2018 and has quickly become a Test regular for head coach Warren Gatland. In total he has nine tries in 18 Tests – an impressive strike rate.
Looking ahead to facing France in Oita on Sunday, Adams added: “It’s extremely exciting. You could argue it’s the biggest week of my career so far with playing in a World Cup quarter-final. I’d never have said I’d be standing here telling you that 18 months ago, but I’m over the moon to be here.
“Selection dependent, hopefully I can get out there on Sunday and do everybody proud.
“We’ve got a really tough 80 minutes next Sunday, but there is no reason why this group of players can’t achieve something special. We’ve got belief in each other and in the squad.
“We’re all really excited moving forwards now.”
Wales will return to training in Beppu ahead of their France clash with Gatland set to have all of his 31-man squad fit and available for the first time this tournament.
It is a big boost especially after key backs Dan Biggar (head), Jonathan Davies (knee) and George North (ankle) all recovered from knocks.
“Yes of course, it’s massive,” Adams said of the trio’s recovery. “They’re all in the leadership group and they’re massive voices around the squad. It’s brilliant to have Jon’s scan result looking good, Biggs has come through his head knock fine, and I think George was just a sore ankle.
“I’m pretty sure they’ll all be fit if selected for Sunday and it will be good if we can get a good week of preparation. That will give us the best chance of performing well.”
Adams brushed off a small thigh knock to score his latest try against Uruguay and now has his eyes set on France. The last match was a tight affair where Gatland’s side had to overturn a 16-0 half-time deficit.
“France are renowned for being able to turn it on and when they do they’re extremely dangerous. They’ve got some quality players,” said Adams.
“At times in this competition they’ve looked really, really good. They definitely pose a threat to us without a doubt. We’re excited now because this is where we wanted to get ourselves to. Top of the pool gives us the best chance of making it all the way.”
