Newport Ready For Rocky Ride At Bedwas

Newport have made seven changes, one positional, from the side that fell 27-25 at home to Neath in midweek for their Principality Cup seventh round trip to First Division Bedwas.

Hal Luscombe and Jason Strange come into the back division in place of Alex Cadwallader and Shane Howarth, while Ceri Jones, Chris Anthony, Andy Powell and Rhys Jones are all introduced to the pack.

Jones and Anthony take over the propping duties from Rod Snow and Adrian Garvey, while Powell replaces Ian Gough at blindside flanker and Rhys Jones comes in for Steve Ojomoh at No 8. Ian Gough moves from the back row to second row in place of Mike Voyle.

Snow and Howarth weren’t considered after picking up knocks against Neath and hooker James Richards is still receiving treatment for his injured neck.

‘After the manner of our defeat against Neath we wanted to give as many of the side the chance to get back into action as soon as possible. It was a bitter blow to let a 22 point lead slip on Wednesday night and we need a good result at Bedwas,’ said Newport team manager Jim McCreedy.

‘We have a lot of respect for what has been achieved by the Bedwas team on the field and by their committee off it. Bedwas is a great rugby club with a fine cup tradition and we can expect a stern test on Saturday.

‘I played at Bedwas many teams with Newport United and we always had to battle hard to win. There are strong links between the two clubs and I’m sure it is going to be a great cup day out for our players and supporters.’

Former Newport coach Roy Duggan began his career at Bedwas, and went on to coach the village side, and Rodney Parade stalwart Tony Mogridge was a Bedwas product. Bedwas will have former Newport and Wales Under 21 cap Chris Brown in their ranks at the weekend and there are a number of other players with links to Newport.

The two teams last met in the cup in the 1987/88 season when Newport ran out 20-0 winners at the Bridge Field. Bedwas have beaten Tredegar and Nantymoel to date this season in the cup, while Newport have just entered the competition.

‘Bedwas had an excellent win over Blackwood last weekend and we have studied a tape of that game to get an insight into how they play. There is no doubt this is going to be a very tough contest,’ added McCreedy.
