North ready to fire

Wales star George North is ready to release his frustration on Scotland in the RBS 6 Nations.

The giant wing scored the winning try during Wales’ historic triumph over France in Paris last month.

But he had limited opportunities in Rome as Rob Howley’s men went back to basics against Italy.

North admits he had been disappointed with his lack of action but he is determined to cut loose at Murrayfield tomorrow.

“I have been frustrated but it comes down to where we are on the pitch and what is happening in the game,” said North.

“The last two games have been great team performances but not the greatest spectacles.

“We want the chance to throw the ball around but we have to be patient.

“I will keep working hard to get into the right places at the right times.”

Wales have won eight of the last nine encounters with Scotland and both sides are leading the chase after Championship pace-setters England.

On a personal level North will go up against fellow giant Tim Visser. The flying Scotsman is the leading try-scorer in the RaboDirect PRO12 and North admits he poses a major challenge.

“We have to make sure we keep our hands on Visser, although the whole team has really come on,” said North.

“Stuart Hogg, Sean Maitland and Visser will certainly keep up us busy and I’m looking forward to that challenge. They offer out-and-out gas and are working well together.

“I’ve faced Visser a few times at club level and he’s an outstanding player, a natural try-scorer. Our job as a three is to negate that weapon and try to keep them quiet.

“We are similar outfits, we both have big guys who can take it up and have options to throw it wide.

“The potential is there for this to be a really open game.”

Wales trail England by 17 in points difference and must rack up the scores if they are to defend their Championship crown.

North insists it is achievable but he is well aware that his side cannot afford to throw caution to the win.

“We have a chance so we will go flat out until there is nothing left,” added the Scarlets ace.

“The next fortnight feels like the final sprint of the Six Nations marathon. Rob Howley hit the nail on the head when he pulled us together and told us our Championship starts now.

“After a funny start, which was all about getting that first win, now we have a chance to defend our crown.

“We cannot forget that against Scotland we have to try to win the game before we start thinking about points.

“Yes we want to show our cutting edge and the more points we score the better our chance of winning the tournament, but you will not beat Scotland at Murrayfield by thinking about scoring tries in the first 10 minutes.

“It is a massive ask but we will do everything we can to pull the rabbit out the hat.”
