One of rugby’s most dynamic administrators – who has overseen formidable commercial growth at four of the UK’s top clubs – has been appointed to the key role of Tournament Director of the new look Celtic League.

Keith Grainger, 45, former Chief Executive of Newport RFC and Northampton Saints and previously the commercial driving force behind both Leicester Tigers and Newcastle Falcons, begins in his new post on Thursday 22 May.)

John Hussey, Celtic League Chairman, said: “I’m delighted that the flagship professional tournament of the three Celtic unions – Ireland, Scotland and Wales – has been able to secure Keith’s leadership. He has a very firm understanding of the demands of the professional game and his commercial acumen is second to none.

“The Celtic League is looking to build on its first two years in existence, during which we have captured the imagination of players, clubs, supporters, broadcasters and media. We have secured an extended fixture list for next season and Keith’s appointment will play a major role in the development of our competition.

“A key task for Keith will be liaising with competing clubs and raising tournament revenues through sponsorship and other commercial activity.”

Keith Grainger said: “I see the new look Celtic League as an outstanding opportunity for all three countries – a northern hemisphere tri-nation Super 12 which will develop, at pace, on and off the pitch during the seasons ahead.

“The game of rugby union offers the supporter the most family friendly atmosphere of any modern day professional spectator sport with fun for the kids and camaraderie for the grown-ups off the pitch, while we leave the all out war to the players who perform to an ever increasing standard on it!

“The agreed new format of a full-blown Super 12 style competition with games being played on a home and away basis will offer the players and coaches all the higher intensity games that they seek, while offering the supporter top quality rugby on a regular basis.”

During his tenure at Newport, Grainger trebled revenues. At Northampton in 1999 he pioneered the club’s first ticket office and saw crowds and gate receipts increase significantly.

Previously during his spell at Leicester Tigers he boosted turnover by almost 50% in his first year and at Newcastle enjoyed two total sell-out games even though the Falcons had not at that time won promotion to the English Premiership.
