Josh Adams has challenged Wales to build on their strong finish to the Autumn Nations Cup campaign for the “big one” which will be the 2021 Guinness Six Nations.

Wayne Pivac’s side ended the year as they started it with a convincing win over Italy – this time emerging 38-18 winners and scoring five tries.

Scores came from Kieran Hardy, Sam Parry, Gareth Davies, George North and Justin Tipuric.

Wing Adams hopes the Azzurri success can be the backbone for a strong start to the New Year.

“In some areas we can definitely get better. Our defence has got a lot better, but we conceded a few cheap penalties at the breakdown against Italy when we were a little bit eager to get in and jackal,” said Adams.

“At times it is about not dipping our heads into every breakdown because our speed and pressure off the line will give us those opportunities without forcing them.

“A small tweak there would help and maybe just a bit of game management. What Wayne has done is give guys more than one cap and more than just 20 minutes.

“That has been excellent and will put us in good stead. These are experiences that are going to be invaluable for us.

“What we spoke about when we came off the field is where we began and where we finished. I think most people can agree there has been a massive improvement.

“We’re all going to be given areas to improve on because ultimately come the end of January the Six Nations is a massive competition, isn’t it?

“That’s the tournament in the calendar – the big one, if you like. It’s about picking up where we left up come the end of January for the Six Nations.”

The last 12 months has been dominated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coronavirus caused the 2020 Guinness Six Nations to be postponed until the autumn while Wales’ planned summer tour of New Zealand was also cancelled.

Asked to rate the last year, Adams said: “Taking everything into account with Covid, lockdown, no rugby, having to wear masks, social-distancing and all these new measures that have had to come in, it would be a 6.5, maybe?

“It could definitely be better, but saying that we have to be very grateful in the position we are in.

“We are still working and get the opportunity to do what we enjoy. Playing for Wales throughout these circumstances has been brilliant for us.

“At times it has been disappointing and I can understand everyone’s frustrations don’t get me wrong, but it’s been invaluable to get the Welsh jersey back on to try and give the people at home something to cheer and smile about.”
